Claude Thiel, copist of masterpieces
or Art of copies

This site has for objective to make you share my passion of painting...

"Each painter is a composer and has its handwriting, I have to decipher it...
"To make copies of masterpieces, it is as playing an instrument of music in an orchestra,
the original work of the painter is my partition...
"I am both an interpreter...and a chief of orchestra..."

The Art of copies
The exhibition of the "masterpieces" of the painter de La Tour which takes place at the Grand Palais in Paris from october 1997 to January 1998 shows 41 paintings, whose in fact 32 are copies and only 9 are "original".
This exhibition which is going to attract tens of thousands of visitors, rehabilitates and devotes the copy of masterpieces.
Van Gogh told "During my sickness, it happened a misfortune-this lithography of Delacroix the Pietà with others pictures fell in oil and the paint damaged. I was sad-then meanwhile, I occupied to paint it".
Locked in an asylum, and having for all contact only some drawings during this period, Van Gogh remainded what he liked.
"I made some copies that I believe are felt." Van Gogh.
To make copies was also for Van Gogh all both an exercise, a homage and a mean to summarize forces.
The copy of paintings is a form of apprenticeship, Rubens copied Raphaël, Delacroix copied Rubens, Manet, Mondrian copied Delacroix, Van Gogh copied Millet and Delacroix.
The family workshop of Bruegel realized and earned money during several generations with copies of the master.
To such point, that with the time, all these copies are today recognized as pieces of value and original paintings...
Dream also that some paintings such "Iris" or the "portrait of the Dr Gachet"of Van Gogh are today locked in private collection chests, sometimes bought to the telephone by unknown buyers, then, together give them a new life after this burial of first class...
